They are the “Net” Generation – “kids” between 16 and 29. Call them Echo Boomers, Generation Y or Millenials, your business is going to hinge on their performance. Health club managers must evolve their communication and leadership skills in order to be successful with this new generation of employees. The Millenials bring unique skills and challenges to the workplace. They have been raised with more luxury than any previous generation, have doting parents, and have robust personal relationships based on the Internet and text messaging. Formalities understood by previous generations (arriving on time, respecting a business hierarchy) are new to them. They are also a highly entrepreneurial generation, and they value work/life balance and meaningful feedback as much or more than pay rates and benefits. Discuss the challenges and opportunities of hiring and managing this new generation of employees, with specific strategies for communicating and motivating them.
